Chora of Astypalaia: In Chora you may find some of the most important attractions of the island the square and the 8 windmills are a trademark. Crossing the picturesque alleys of the island and reaching the top of Chora is the Castle of Astypalaia. Also, don't forget to pass by the world's only Infant Cemetery.
Monasteries and Chapels: There are more than 350 monasteries and chapels in Astypalaia. The main church of the island and cathedral is Panagia Portaitissa just below the castle. Near the Castle there are two white churches, Panagia of the Castle and Agios Georgios. The Monastery of Panagia Flevariotissa is well known, it is located in Chora and part of the church is built inside a cave. The Monastery of Agios Ioannis is located on the south side of the island and is built in a landscape with a beautiful view. Below the chapel there are orchards and springs with gurgling water. The ravine ends at a beach with crystal clear waters. Finally, the church of Panagia the Poulariani, patroness of sailors, is located on the road to Vathi. The rock forms the Virgin Mary with the infant in her arms. According to tradition, a light is lit on the rocks during bad weather.
Pera Gialos or Old Port: It is the traditional port of Astypalaia and is located below Chora. There you will find the Archaeological Museum, where its findings display interest for the island’s history.
Islets: Boats depart daily from the port of Pera Gialos for daily cruises to the exotic islands of Koutsomitis, Kounoupes and Tigani. It is an excursion that we recommend to our travelers as the waters and landscapes are different from the beaches of the rest of the island.
Caves : There are three caves on the island that an alternative traveler could visit. The Cave of Negros, in Vatses, with the unique stalactites and stalagmites, The Cave of the Dragon, or Dragon Cave, in Vathy and the Cave of Panagia Poulariani, in Maltezana, or Analipsi.
